Despite its common name, the oriental cockroach is thought to be from North Africa. This species is found worldwide.
Description: Oriental cockroaches range in size from 1-1-1/4 inch long. They are generally black, but can vary in color including reddish-brown.
Biology: Under ideal conditions, female oriental cockroaches can produce up to 280 offspring in her lifetime. Developmental time varies greatly on environmental conditions, but their lifespan can be up to three years.
Habits: The Oriental cockroach can survive outdoors and is usually found in stones, leaf litter or under debris. These concealed moist areas provide both protection and decaying organic matter for food. Oriental cockroaches can also survive indoors by entering structures through small openings, along utility pipes and through floor drains. They feed on filth and have a strong odor. |
