Cellar Spiders

Order: Araneae

Family: Pholcidae

These spiders get their common name because they are mostly found in dark, damp places such as basements, cellars, and crawl spaces. They are also commonly called "Daddy longlegs" because of their long, thin legs.

Description: Adults range in length from 1/16" to 5/16". They have a small body with very long legs. Their color ranges from pale yellow to grayish brown.

Biology: Female spiders can produce up to three egg sacs which contain up to 60 eggs each. These sacs resemble an un-ripened blackberry. The female generally carries the sacs in her jaw until hatching. Egg to adult time is typically one year and the Cellar Spider typically lives about two years.

Habits: Cellar spiders create uneven webs and hang upside-down on the web's underside. Cellar spiders build new webs rather than cleaning the old ones. This results in many webs within a short period of time.
